Avowed Breaks Barriers with Xbox Cloud Saves on Steam: How to Sync Your Progress
Obsidian’s latest title, Avowed, marks an exciting milestone for the gaming world. Not only is it the first game from Microsoft Studios to be made available on Battle.net—offering seamless cross-purchasing between the platform and Xbox—but it also introduces a game-changing feature for cross-platform saves. This feature allows players to use Xbox Cloud saves, even when playing Avowed on Steam, a significant development that enhances player experience across platforms.
We discovered this groundbreaking feature while testing Avowed for our review. After Indiana Jones implemented a similar functionality last December, we were eager to dive in and explore how it worked with Avowed.
How to Sync Your Xbox Avowed Save with Steam
To take advantage of Xbox Cloud saves, follow these simple steps:
Log into Steam: First, launch your Steam copy of Avowed.
Link Your Xbox Account: In the bottom left corner of the screen, you’ll notice an “X” icon (or an equivalent keyboard shortcut if you’re using a keyboard and mouse). Click on it to open a dialogue box prompting you to connect your Xbox account.
Log into the Xbox PC App: Once you’ve clicked the icon, you’ll be asked to log in via the Xbox PC app. This process is similar to linking accounts for other games like Diablo 4 on Battle.net.
Select Your Save: After linking your accounts, you can either begin a new game or continue from where you left off, even if you were previously playing on Xbox Game Pass.
This feature is a huge benefit for players who wish to switch between platforms without losing their progress. For example, I’ve been able to play Avowed on both Xbox and Steam without starting over, simply by using two separate save slots for my character profiles.
What to Keep in Mind
While the Xbox Cloud save feature is mostly seamless, there’s one caveat: it doesn’t currently work on SteamOS devices like the Lenovo Legion Go S. Although the Xbox login option appears on the loading screen, it fails to launch on SteamOS, whether in Game Mode or Desktop Mode. This was also an issue with Indiana Jones.
With the increasing popularity of SteamOS handhelds and Xbox’s push to expand this feature across first-party games, we expect these issues to be addressed soon.
